In this presentation, Porter explains the fundamentals of how to analyze an industry and how to position a company within its industry, and uses the power of the video to bring his ideas to life.
In Part 1, Professor Porter introduces the five forces that determine competition in any industry. Drawing on examples from the pharmaceutical and airline industries, Porter shows how to understand the structure of your industry, to predict whether it is changing for better or for worse and how you might influence all crucial prerequisites to choosing the appropriate competitive strategy for your company.
In Part 2, Porter takes you behind the scenes at Procter & Gamble, La Quinta Motor Inns, American Airlines and Cray Research to reveal competitive positioning in action. You will go on a guided tour of the strategies of these outstanding companies. Porter also engages in dialogues about strategy (and how to carry it out) with company executives Robert Crandall of American Airlines, John Pepper of Proctor & Gamble ... After each case, Porter returns to his Harvard Business School classroom to derive general lessons about achieving competitive advantage.
This program illustrates vividly the essentials of competitive strategy and how to put them into practice.
