The purpose of this study was to determine the factors determining the performance of football clubs in the Kenya Football League. The study was guided by the following specific objectives: To establish what constitutes performance in the Kenya Football Leagues; To establish the factors determining performance of football clubs in the Kenya Football Leagues; To suggest ways of improving performance of football clubs in the Kenya Football Leagues. A quantitative research design was adopted to answer the research questions where a questionnaire was utilized in individual and group interviews. The target population was the management teams of the football clubs in the Kenya football leagues which comprise of more than 1,320 teams; the sample size was 205 respondents. The researcher utilized and structured questionnaire to collect data factors affecting performance of football clubs and carried out a Factor analysis, content analysis and Regression analysis to establish the factors that have the highest explanatory power on the performance of the clubs. The study established that popularity of the football club was the most important indicator of performance followed by league position at the end of the season and the least significant was generation of revenue; majority of the respondents indicated that location of their clubs positively affects the ability of the club to generate revenue. The study looked into the following factors to determine the success rate of a club: Geographical locality of the club; Past success of the club; Availability of finances; Economic development of the region the club is situated; The salaries and wages paid by the club staff; The coming on board of Super sport Kenya; Frequency of the incidences of Hooliganism and the Ethnicity and Tribal affiliation of the club. The study concluded that in order of significance: Availability of finances is the most significant factor determining performance of the club followed by Ethnicity and Tribal affiliations and lastly geographical location of the foot ball club. These findings were used to make recommendation to Football club management on the ways in which they could improve their performance.
